I can't turn off my analysis, only work to turn it to serve those who don't introspect in "socially functional" ways, or maybe just often enough. Many people can see beauty purely in form; I am limited in that I require the balance of function for my true appreciation. In making sense of things like love and the meaning of life and the rise and fall of civilization, I believe we need that mix of art and engineering that is the quintessential difference between human life and any other that has ever graced (or plagued) a finite set of resources.
I so agree with your assessment of Lauren Valley's traffic reporting. I love hearing her laugh and chat with the DJs, and she certainly has that sympathetic and caring tone. Its a little surprising the way the people on XPN have crept into my life over the years. My sneaking suspicion was confirmed when I learned that the voice on the NJT Riverline is Michaela Majune!

From the article “The Killers Inside” by Brian Hiatt (Rolling Stone-Issue 1068/1069)

“The ungrammatical chorus of “Human” (“Are we human, or are we dancer”) is just as impenetrable. [Singer Brandon] Flowers is irritated that people don’t quite seem to get the lyric, and that fans were unhappy with the song’s dance beat. “It’s supposed to be a dance song, it goes with the chorus,” he says. “If you can’t put that together, you’re an idiot. I just don’t get why there’s a confusion about it.”

Perhaps it is because “dancer” is not an adjective, as he is trying to use in the song. Considering the fact that the term “a confusion” is also coming up as grammatically incorrect, I do not believe Flowers should be calling anyone an idiot.

He even goes on to compare himself to Bob Dylan, claiming that in a backstage conversation with Bruce Springsteen, Springsteen “talked about how undeniable the first record was. And I brought up my concerns about it all, and, you know, he said he dealt with the same thing with Bob Dylan.”

Oh, you know, as if Brandon Flowers could ever, on any level, compare to Bob Dylan.

While I have the highest respect for your musical taste, Nicholas, perhaps it is time to admit that “Human” belongs on a list of guilty pleasures...along with Neil Diamond. ;-)

While I have the highest respect for your musical taste, Nicholas, perhaps it is time to admit that “Human” belongs on a list of guilty pleasures…along with Neil Diamond.

I love the title of your list-- I know my life has benefited, especially because of the first two albums on your list. I saw Rhett Miller give an interview where he said that he hoped the songs on "Blame it on the Gravity" would be useful, and I think that's what they are, first and foremost. Good list. :)

Between the ages of 5 and 10, I was listening to Green Day, Nirvana, Metallica, et. al. courtesy of my older brother. Looking back, I would consider my musical choices to be a tad inappropriate (check out The Offspring’s “Bad Habit”---I used to think I was such a rebel listening to that one), and eventually I was indeed lured over to the dark side. Pop music was the soundtrack to my awkward pre-teen years. N*Sync, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees---and yes, even Britney. When you’re at that age, the purpose of nearly your entire existence is to attempt to fit in with everyone else. So, if that means selling your soul to pop music, then so be it. By the time I was an angst-filled 13-year-old, it was back to rock for me and I haven’t looked back since. I think the pre-pubescent girls of this generation will just have to ride the wave of their Jonas Brothers obsession and hopefully make it out on the other side no worse for the wear.

And you’re welcome for the Queen, by the way. Maybe I’ll have to once again venture into the dank recesses of my basement to find some more albums with which to enlighten you. :-)

I don't look down on teens or pre-teens who love the equivalent of the Jonas Brothers. My "Jonas Brothers" was Donny Osmond yet, as an adult, I love all genres of music short of opera or jazz fusion.

However, people who loved Queen when they were 18 and then continue to listen exclusively to that same band 30 years later, drive me Bill Hicks-crazy. I worked at a classic rock station for 12 months and was stunned by how many times people could listen to the chubby Wilson girl sing "Magic Man." Once we tried to sneak Nirvana's cover of Bowie's "Man Who Ruled The World" onto the air and the program director nearly exploded.

I'm a HUGE fan of old ridiculous musicals because of these shots of talent (but I'd have put up the Minstrel Show number from White Christmas -- Vera Ellen is unreal in that -- or even the ballet from Singing in the Rain with Cyd Charisse) but I have to say that the Beyonce "Singles Ladies" video is fierce. Even better, the Justin Timberlake SNL parody skit. Anyway, interesting post.

Well, as a first hand witness to the chaos of Sunday brunch (yes, I'm Erica) let me be the first to say how accurate my brother's description of that now infamous day was, but how the humor I felt in reading about it was quite different from the nauseating experience itself. Nick, you are a wonderful writer, but I only wish you could, in the moment, express yourself and your opinions of what is happening around you in an equally light hearted way. Our father, whom I love more than any man on this planet, is insane. I don't mean he's standing in a pile of old shoes and cat hair crazy, but completely and utterly disillusioned crazy. This is the same man who when the Holier-than-thou John McCain first got the nomination said that he was "too liberal to be a real republican candidate"...ah yes, the good old days. And when I did voice my devotion to vote for Obama, every time I saw or spoke to my father since then (and still today) he would greet me as , AND I QUOTE, "my poor, misguided, misinformed, uneducated daughter." So when election night was over, and the fires had been extinguished I wanted nothing more than for us all to let it lie. My brother Nick however, who NEVER came out for one side or another felt the right as a silent observer to stir up a topic he KNEW would get a reaction from out father and he decided to do it in public while celebrating our little brothers birthday. Well, bravo Nick, you managed to resurrect the welcome death of this nightmare of political conversations in our family and made our grandmother so nervous around her own son she actually started to believe, or hope, that there had already been a black president and this wasn't such a big deal...bravo!

My expectations are always high when it comes to Ryan Adams. I have only fully listened to Cardinology three times, and of course, some songs are growing on me. The others are just mundane and are truly lacking...well, lot's of things! And yes, this album seems to be heavily produced compared to his earlier albums.

Mr. Adams seemed to go down-hill with his music making when Easy Tiger came out last year. He was sober then and he is sober now. All his great stuff is the fucked up, under god knows what influences, goodness! I also think the Cards are bringing him down. Cold Roses is my favorite album by RA, no doubt, but Easy Tiger, and now Cardinology, are my least. Are they inhibiting him? Or is he inhibiting himself? Maybe both. And as my cousin stated, he may be too concerned with other things than focusing on writing good music( dating popstars, writing books, and being in Rolling Stone.) Another thing my cousin said, which I found very funny and true, is that Ryan is almost due for a hissy fit and blow up on the Cardinals.

I'm frustrated, but I suppose he's bound to make a few mediocre albums after all the greatness he produced beforehand. I have faith that we'll be getting some more great RA music in the future. He better do some solo stuff soon...and maybe throw back a few beers or a bottle of wine ;)

I'll chime in the middle here - first, i agree that xpn is, at its most "essential" the sum of its parts, but also, excited to find out what listeners find the songs they think most explain this sum. As listeners, we were asked for our 10 most essential songs, not just the one. I think this levels the field. As far as the results - I'm using them as a shopping list, starting at the top and working my way down to collect some awesome music, as I found, as the countdown went on, my extensive music collection was STILL sorely lacking.
Best to you!
